Rosie fidgeted in her seat at the café. If she didn’t get up and do something soon, she was going to lose her mind.

“Mum, we can’t just sit here while Dad is over there having a secret meeting with some pregnant woman!” Rosie hissed across the table. It wasn’t the first time she’d said those words, or something similar, in the last five minutes, but yet again, her mother brushed her off.

“Please, Rosie, just give me a second,” Lorraine said. “I feel like my brain is on fire.”

Her mother’s gaze had remained fixed on the scene across the lane ever since the unknown young woman had arrived at Colin’s table and sat down. Rosie saw the confusion and indecision and fear on her mother’s face. It was impossible to miss the emotions sketched there for all the world to see.

The irony was impossible to miss, too. Lorraine had confessed her terrible fear that Colin might be having an affair, and Rosie had as good as laughed in her face at the very idea of it. And then, moments later, an unknown female—an unknown pregnant female—had joined Colin in the café, where he’d proceeded to hug her and kiss her and invite her to join him at his table where he’d taken her hands in his as they began talking.

It had taken Rosie several long and awful moments to get her thoughts working again as she’d contemplated the scene in the café across the lane. But now that her brain was under control once more, she knew one thing for certain.

There had to be an explanation for what was going on over there, an explanation that didn’t involve the sordid affair that Lorraine feared. Rosie could not believe her father would ever cheat on her mother, let alone with a woman who looked the same age as herself.

And as for the pregnancy bump? Well, there had to be some explanation for that, too, one that didn’t involve her father in any way, shape or form. Rosie clung on to that hope, even as she watched her father hold the young woman’s hands and talk to her with his head bent close to hers like they were the only two people in the world.

No. It wasn’t what it looked like. It couldn’t be what it looked like.

All the more reason to get over there and find out what was actually going on.

“Mum, I’ve listened to everything you’ve told me,” Rosie said gently. “I hear what you’ve said about Dad acting a bit strange lately, and how he’s never off his phone these days, and being secretive and grumpy. I hear all of that. And I’m the first to admit that it doesn’t look good that Dad ran out of his own surprise birthday party in order to come here for what looks very much like a clandestine meeting with a young woman, a meeting he didn’t want you to know anything about. But I know Dad. And you know Dad better than any of us.
